Episode 3

Sometimes the greatest work we can accomplish is when we help each other.
Army Ranger Veteran Pieter Winne is using his purpose and passion to raise funds and provide services for veterans struggling with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
Mike Maddox, host of the ARC’s Podcast Anxiety Unraveled, sat down with Pieter to get a better understanding of the mission-based work he is doing.
With over 30 years of service in the military and almost 30 years in leadership roles, Pieter has been able to use his diverse skillset to help others in need.
He said he recognized his own personal struggle with reacclimating to society after serving in the military and wanted to help others. He created an event on his farm, at Winne Acres, to offer support to other rangers.
“Since 2001, approximately 6,600 soldiers have died in combat,” Pieter said. “It’s Heartbreaking… Heartbreaking. These are heroes. During the same time period, though,145,000 veterans died by suicide.”
He said that statistic has impacted him heavily and he wanted to find a way to make a difference.
“What you are doing on the farm is enormously helpful. Bringing people together to genuinely support each other is consistent with what the Anxiety Resource Center is all about. Not necessarily for veterans. It’s about bringing people together that struggle with anxiety disorders and saying we are going to be honest with each other, we’re just going to share, we are going to help each other, we’re gonna lean in. It’s amazing the magic that happens in a group like that. You are doing the same thing, and it’s having an impact.” Mike added.
What originally became a way to get veterans together has opened a path to learning about PTSD, understanding the symptoms, and helping support veterans in getting the help they need. Pieter works with a charity called H.O.O.A.H. Inc to provide combat veterans the opportunity to attend the Warrior Wellness Program in Florida. A program that provides healing from the traumas of war.
